The voluntary work Jenny and Stuart started in July 2004 is a memorial to their darling Penny. Without her coming into their lives none of this would have happened.

ADOPTING A GREYHOUND

When adopting a greyhound the suggested donation is £150.00 which goes towards neutering, inoculations, upkeep etc. Some people give a little less, while
others want to give more. We are quite flexible with this, and with this we provide:

CAN YOU TEMPORARILY FOSTER A GREYHOUND FOR US?
Fosterers are a valuable part of greyhound rescue in that another greyhound is living life away from the kennels and taking the first steps towards getting used to the family way of life. If you live in the South Lakes or the surrounding area and would like to foster a greyhound until we can find him or her a new home.
please contact Jenny or Stuart

Sonny is a large stunning white and black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 14th July 2012. He weighs 38.5 kg., is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped.
Sonny is a very happy dog who is fine with children and loves a lot of fuss and attention. He gets quite excited at the idea of going for a walk but is okay on the lead once he's out. He travels well in a car, is okay with other breeds of dogs while out walking but can be a bit on the rough side when he first meets them, which we hope will reduce as more come into his world. He really is a super lad and will make someone a fantastic companion - Can you help us find him a new home?
Harmony is a lovely small blue female ex-racing greyhound who is a happy and playful girl. She is house trained, spayed, inoculated, and microchipped.
Harmony walks nicely on the lead but gets very excited when she sees people and other dogs because all she wants to do is to say hello. However, she is very strong and takes a bit of holding at the moment. This we are working on and we are sure she will learn to approach others at a more sedate pace once the 'penny has dropped'!. She is okay with children and travels well in the car. - Can you help us find her a new home?

Lottie is a small black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 10th May 2014. She's a quiet and adorable little girl who weighs about 26.1 kg. She is spayed, house trained, inoculated and microchipped.
Lottie's racing career came to an end when she pulled a tendon in her back left leg. This doesn't stop her enjoying life and will hop at times when out and about, however we've been told with rest she should be okay. She walks lovely on a lead, is okay with children and generally okay with other dogs although she sometimes has a grumble when she first meets them - something we've been told she’s done since being a puppy. Lottie is a super girl and travels well in a car.

HOMED: Monday 6th November

King - Black Greyhound
King

King is a black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 10th August 2010 and weighs 32.66 kg.
As a pup King fell on hard times and slept on concrete. When the owner/trainer who brought him here heard about him and the condition he was in he immediately acquired King. King was covered in weeping sores and had no hair on his body apart from a line down his back.
King is now fit and well but the hair on his back end is slow to return. He's lived in a house, is house trained, used to having a bed downstairs and another upstairs in the bedroom. He's a friendly dog who loves affection, travels well in a car, walks nicely on the lead once the initial excitement of getting his lead on passes, he's fine with children and while out on his walks he ignores other breeds of dogs. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Lyric - blue greyhound

Lyric
(now called Blue)

Lyric is a small blue ex-racing greyhound whose career finished when she broke a toe but this is now healed and she walks okay on it. She weighs 25 kg., came into season on the 30th October which was suppressed so will need spaying around the end of January 2018. She is house trained, inoculated and microchipped.
Lyric is a very shy little girl she gets to know you, so she is looking for a home where the family will help her gain the confidence she needs to enjoy life to the full. She is fine with children and other breeds of dogs and travels well in a car.

HOMED: Saturday 28th October

Ash - Fawn Greyhound

Ash

Ash is a beautiful small fawn ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 1st September 2012.

Nico
(cat trainable)
Nico is a blue ex-racing greyhound who retired from racing when he broke his hock. This is now okay and he's been living in a house since the plaster was removed 3 months ago.
Nico is a super lad with a lovely nature who weighs 30.30kg. He is neutered, inoculated, microchipped, okay with children and other breeds of dogs. He walks nicely on the lead and travels well in a car.

RESERVED

Sabrina is a lovely white and black ex-racing greyhound who is Sonya's litter sister, and who was born on the 6th January 2012. She is house trained, spayed, inoculated and microchipped.
Sabrina is a happy, confident and outgoing girl who travels well in a car. - Can you help us find her a new home?

Mick is a black greyhound who was born in November 2015, weighs 29 kg and shows no interest in racing.
Mick has a gentle nature, is good in the car, calm on his walks and has no fear of traffic. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Clyde is a blue ex-racing greyhound who was born in June 2014. He weighs 31.8 kg. and is currently living in his owner's home so he is house trained.
Clyde is a very laid back and kind dog who is good with children, okay with small dogs and could even be cat trainable - he shows no interest in cats or dogs when out walking. walks okay on the lead and travels well in a car.
Clyde broke his hock in a race a few weeks ago. His pot came off on the 9th October 2017 and he is looking forward to being in his forever home.

Diva

Diva is a black female ex-racing greyhound who is coming here shortly.
Diva was born in February 2015, weighs 30 kg, is microchipped and her inoculations are up to date.

Dogs in long-term foster homes

Brindle Greyhound

BECKY IS IN A LONG-TERM FOSTER HOME with Beckham another greyhound. Becky is a beautiful fawn brindle ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 2nd May 2004.
Becky lived with an elderly gentleman for a few months, but was sadly returned to 'Rescue' because of the deterioration of her owner's health.
Becky went to her long-term foster home on Tuesday 18th November 2014 where she will be loved and cared for during her twilight years.

Pearly - black greyhound

PEARLY IS IN A LONG-TERM FOSTER HOME
He was re-homed in August 2011, but because of his owner's passing away he came back to us. Pearly is a happy lad who weighs 27.10k .
Pearly suffers from kidney problems and went into long-term foster care on Monday 1st August 2016 where he will stay and be loved and cared for during his twilight years.

ABOUT US:
We've had greyhounds since April 1997 and between July 2004 and November 2009 we fostered 82 for Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue. During December 2009 we established the SOUTH LAKES branch of the Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT). The Retired Greyhound Trust re-branded it's name to the Greyhound Trust on the 1st June 2017 and we are now the 'Greyhound Trust South Lakes'. Since first starting we have now fostered and homed in excess of 485 greyhounds.
Being in the South Lakes we are situated at the southern end of the English Lake District in Cumbria at Witherslack, which is half way between Kendal and Grange-over-Sands. As fosterers it is our passion to help greyhounds through the transition stage from kennels to home life, helping them to adapt to the family way of life and being part of our family until they find their forever homes.

WHY ADOPT A GREYHOUND?

Greyhounds make wonderful pets. They are for life, not just for racing. They all deserve a second chance. Greyhounds are elegent, very intelligent, tend to be laid back, lazy if given the chance, need little exercise, often just two, half hour walks a day. Greyhounds thrive on love and affection, adapt quickly to the family way of life and make very gentle and loyal pets.

Many thousands of Greyhounds are bred each year in the UK and Ireland and thousands of puppies and youngsters are put to sleep because they don't make the grade for racing. The average age of a Greyhound coming into 'Rescue' is 3 to 4 years old when they are no longer needed. However, the normal life expectancy of a Greyhound is between 12 and 15 years - the longest living of the larger breeds of dog means they have many years ahead of them once they are no longer needed for racing Only a very small percentage are the lucky ones who are re-homed.

GREYHOUNDS

White and black Greyhound
Lena came into our lives
on the 23rd May 2013. Not
quite 2 years old she didn't
make the grade for racing,
but she raced headlong
into our hearts and home.

Fawn Greyhound

Star came into our lives on the 18th October 2015. When our 4 month old grand daughter cried for her bottle, he came over and rested his head on her shoulder and within a minute she was calm. It sealed his future with us.

Robbie - black Greyhound

Robbie was here a year before being adopted. His new owners lost confidence after he was hurt by 2 off lead terriers. He came back and became the newest member of our family.
