Greyhounds in long-term fosterer homes:

CAN YOU TEMPORARILY FOSTER A GREYHOUND FOR US?

Fosterers are a valuable part of greyhound rescue in that another greyhound is living life away from the kennels and taking the first steps towards getting used to the family way of life. If you live in the South Lakes or the surrounding area and would like to foster a greyhound until we can find him or her a new home.
please contact Jenny or Stuart
T: 015395 52394 or email us for more information

DOG WALKING
Would you like to walk a Greyhound?
Volunteers offering to take a Greyhound for a walk, an afternoon out or a stop-over play a very important role here at the branch.
please contact Jenny or Stuart T: 015395 52394 or email us for more information and to see how you can help.

Sonny - white and black greyhound

Sonny is a large stunning white and black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 14th July 2012. He weighs 38.5 kg., is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped.
Sonny is a very happy dog who is fine with children and loves a lot of fuss and attention. He gets quite excited at the idea of going for a walk but is okay on the lead once he's out. He travels well in a car, is okay with other breeds of dogs while out walking but can be a bit on the rough side when he first meets them, which we hope will reduce as more come into his world. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Harmony - Blue Greyhound

Harmony is a lovely small blue female ex-racing greyhound who is a happy and playful girl. She is house trained, spayed, inoculated, and microchipped.
Harmony walks nicely on the lead but gets very excited when she sees people and other dogs because all she wants to do is to say hello. However, she is very strong and takes a bit of holding at the moment. This we are working on and we are sure she will learn to approach others at a more sedate pace once the 'penny has dropped'!. She is okay with children and travels well in the car. - Can you help us find her a new home?

Molly
Molly is a lovely brindle greyhound who was born in September 2014 and weighs 26 1/2 kg. She is house trained, inoculated, microchipped and due to be spayed shortly.
Molly walks nicely on the lead, travels well in a car, likes to run and doesn't bother with other breeds of dogs out on her walks.

REHOMED: Friday 8th September

Boris
Boris is a lovely blue ex-racing greyhound who was born in August 2013. He is house trained, neutered, inoculated, microchipped and weighs 28.5 kg.
Boris is a lovely friendly dog who walks nicely on the lead and from what we know of his so far he is okay with other breeds of dogs. However, this at the moment is an ongoing assessment.

REHOMED: Saturday 9th September

Sid - black greyhound

Sid

Sid is a tall black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 24th September 2013. He is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped.
Sid is a very loving lad who likes nothing more than being with you and having lots of cuddles. He walks nicey on the lead and travels well in a car.

REHOMED: Saturday 14th October

Lucy - white Greyhound

Lucy

Lucy is a pretty white greyhound who has black ears and one side of her face is black. She was born in August 2013, weighs 28kg and her inoculations are up to date.
Lucy is a quiet, friendly girl who we've been told walks perfect on the lead, isn't interested in the other breeds of dogs she sees through the fence as they walk along the lane and travels well in a car.

REHOMED: Saturday 23rd September

Lottie
Lottie is a small black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 10th May 2014. She's a quiet girl who weighs about 26.1 kg, is inoculated, microchipped, walks nicely on a lead and travels well in a car. Can you help us find her a new home?

Lilly is a lovely friendly pale brindle ex-racing greyhound who was born in the 8th October 2014. She weighs 27.7kg, is house trained, spayed, inoculated and microchipped.
Lilly is fine with children and other breeds of dogs, walks nicely on a lead and travels well in the car.

waiting a space to come here, but if you wish to
adopt one he/she can be brought here for you.

George
George is a black ex-racing greyhound who was born in August 2011 and who is coming here shortly. His nature is that of Ben who we rehomed in that he is very quiet and loves a cuddle and a fuss. He weighs 35 kg. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Bobby
Bobby is a 30kg. black ex-racing greyhound who broke his tibia and is undergoing recovery at the moment. He will be coming here shortly.
Born in September 2014 he is a quiet, placid dog who is very friendly and okay with children. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Teddy
Teddy is a blue ex-racing greyhound who is coming here shortly. He weighs about 34 kg and is a very friendly dog who loves meeting people. He can get a bit giddy when he knows he's going for a walk and likes to lick you. He sounds quite a character. - Can you help us find him a new home?

King - Black Greyhound

King

King is a black ex-racing greyhound who is coming here shortly. He was born on the 10th August 2010 and weighs 32.66 kg.
As a pup King fell on hard times and was sleeping on concrete. When his current owner/trainer heard about him and the condition he was in he immediately acquired King. King was covered in weeping sores and had no hair on his body apart from a line down his back.
King is now fit and well but the hair on his back end hasn't come back because the hair folicals are ruined. He lives in the house, is house trained, has a bed downstairs and another upstairs in the bedroom. We've been told he is a friendly dog who loves affection, travels well in a car, walks nicely on the lead once the initial excitement of getting his lead on passes, is fine with children and other breeds of dogs while out on his walks he ignores. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Laddy
Laddy is a very shy rather leggy black ex-racing greyhound who is coming here shortly. He's about 3 years old, weighs 34 kg. okay on the lead but needs a bit of time to get used to you, we've been told if you give him a week or two he will then be okay. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Sabrina - white & black greyhound

Sabrina

Sabrina is Sonya's litter sister and their previous owner/trainer say they are as different as 'chalk and cheese' so she is very very confident and outgoing.
She is a lovely white and black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 6th January 2012 and who is coming here shortly. - Can you help us find her a new home?

Paddy

Paddy is a black ex-racing greyhound who is coming here shortly. Born in December 2012 he weighs 34kg. From what we've been told he's a very intelligent dog who shows no interest in other dogs, eats well and is in a good condition but is slightly bald on his back end. Paddy is a nice dog who walks okay on the lead and travels well in a car. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Diva - Black Greyhound

Diva

Diva is a black female greyhound who was born in February 2015 and who is coming here shortly. She weighs 30 kg. and her inoculations are up to date.
Diva only has half a tail because she damaged it by wagging it too much in the kennel - she's a happy girl. - Can you help us find her a new home?

Poppy

Poppy is a white and black ex-racing greyhound who weighs about 27kg and is nearly 4 years old. She is very friendly and affectionate girl who walks okay on the lead and is okay with other breeds of dogs. Dogs in long-term foster homes

Brindle Greyhound

BECKY IS IN A LONG-TERM FOSTER HOME with Beckham another greyhound. Becky is a beautiful fawn brindle ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 2nd May 2004.
Becky lived with an elderly gentleman for a few months, but was sadly returned to 'Rescue' because of the deterioration of her owner's health.
Becky went to her long-term foster home on Tuesday 18th November 2014 where she will be loved and cared for during her twilight years.

Pearly - black greyhound

PEARLY IS IN A LONG-TERM FOSTER HOME
He was re-homed in August 2011, but because of his owner's passing away he came back to us. Pearly is a happy lad who weighs 27.10k .
Pearly suffers from kidney problems and went into long-term foster care on Monday 1st August 2016 where he will stay and be loved and cared for during his twilight years.

ABOUT US:
We've had greyhounds since April 1997 and between July 2004 and November 2009 we fostered 82 for Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue. During December 2009 we established the SOUTH LAKES branchof the Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT). We have now fostered and re-homed in excess of 480 greyhounds.
Being in the South Lakes we are situated at the southern end of the English Lake District in Cumbria at Witherslack, which is half way between Kendal and Grange-over-Sands. As fosterers it is our passion to help greyhounds through the transition stage from kennels to home life, helping them to adapt to the family way of life and being part of our family until they find their forever homes. The voluntary work we do is a memorial to our darling Penny.

WHY ADOPT A GREYHOUND?

Greyhounds make wonderful pets. They are for life, not just for racing. They all deserve a second chance. Greyhounds are elegent, very intelligent, tend to be laid back, lazy if given the chance, need little exercise, often just two, half hour walks a day. Greyhounds thrive on love and affection, adapt quickly to the family way of life and make very gentle and loyal pets.

Many thousands of Greyhounds are bred each year in the UK and Ireland and thousands of puppies and youngsters are put to sleep because they don't make the grade for racing. The average age of a Greyhound coming into 'Rescue' is 3 to 4 years old when they are no longer needed. However, the normal life expectancy of a Greyhound is between 12 and 15 years - the longest living of the larger breeds of dog means they have many years ahead of them once they are no longer needed for racing Only a very small percentage are the lucky ones who are re-homed.

JENNY & STUART'S
GREYHOUNDS

White and black Greyhound
Lena came into our lives
on the 23rd May 2013. Not
quite 2 years old she didn't
make the grade for racing,
but she raced headlong
into our hearts and home.

Fawn Greyhound

Star came into our lives on the 18th October 2015. When our 4 month old grand daughter cried for her bottle, he came over and rested his head on her shoulder and within a minute she was calm. It sealed his future with us.

Robbie - black Greyhound

Robbie was here a year before being adopted. His new owners lost confidence after he was hurt by 2 off lead terriers. He came back and became the newest member of our family.

The aim of the monthly walks are for greyhound owners to meet others in the area and to promote the breed as the amazing pets we all love. When we all walk as a group hopefully people will stop to talk to us and learn about these amazing dogs. Please come along, have fun and help more greyhounds find their forever homes.

OCTOBER 2017
Sunday 8th October 2017
Circular walk at Orton
(between Kendal and Shap)
11:00 hours
Starting at All Saints Church

Let's hope the weather is drier than our September walk!

Park anywhere in Orton village, road side or in the square, then meet up at All Saints Church at 11:00 for 11:15 departure.  The Church is the one on the hill in the village with a lime wash tower.

October walk around Orton
(click for a larger view)

The full circular walk is approx. 4.5 miles and has a couple of steep sections just before the road at point 5 and up to point 6 Beacon Hill Monument, but the rest is easy going. Various shortcuts will be available and we will make sure on the day that nobody is left behind or struggling. The suggested alternative shorter route cuts underneath Orton Scar at Broadfell (4) to the top of Street Lane, then back into village.

If the planned walk is too long or the weather is bad we have options to cut it short as one of the owners coming has good knowledge of all routes. Back in the village there is the chocolate shop with cafe, the Orton Scar Cafe or the George Hotel pub for refreshments after.

As always this is a friendly and fun event for all greyhound owners to come along and meet other hound mad people. Anyone thinking of adopting a hound is also very welcome to attend, meet the dogs and talk to current owners.

Enquiries about the walk please text or phone Emily on 07739 015278.
