Dogs welcome, large or small, one or more. A Greyhound haven!

The voluntary work Jenny and Stuart started in July 2004 is a memorial to their darling Penny. Without her coming into their lives none of this would have happened.

ADOPTING A GREYHOUND

When adopting a greyhound the suggested donation is £150.00 which goes towards neutering, inoculations, upkeep etc. Some people give a little less, while
others want to give more. We are quite flexible with this, and with this we provide:
Martingale Collar, Lead, Muzzle and 4 weeks free cover with the insurance company PetPlan

CAN YOU TEMPORARILY FOSTER A GREYHOUND FOR US?
Fosterers are a valuable part of greyhound rescue in that another greyhound is living life away from the kennels and taking the first steps towards getting used to the family way of life. If you live in the South Lakes or the surrounding area and would like to foster a greyhound until we can find him or her a new home.
please contact Jenny or Stuart

Harmony is a lovely small blue female ex-racing greyhound who is a happy and playful girl. She is house trained, spayed, inoculated, microchipped and recently had a dental.
Harmony has been living in a foster home where there is an almost resident terrier and they are best of friends.
Harmony when she first arrived was very jumpy and skittish when she saw other breeds of dogs because she wouldn't allow herself to sniff them to realise they were like her but a different shape.
When none are around she walks lovely on the lead. We are working on how she approaches other dogs at a more sedate pace and this is slowly improving.
Harmony is perfect in the house, she is okay with children and travels well in the car. - Can you help us find her a new home?

King - Black Greyhound
King

King is a black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 10th August 2010 and weighs 32.66 kg.
As a pup King fell on hard times and slept on concrete. When the owner/trainer who brought him here heard about him and the condition he was in he immediately acquired King.
King
was covered in weeping sores and had no hair on his body apart from a line down his back.
King is now fit and well but the hair on his back end is slow to return. He's lived in a house, is house trained, used to having a bed downstairs and another upstairs in the bedroom.

He's a friendly dog who loves affection, travels well in a car, walks nicely on the lead once the initial excitement of getting his lead on passes, he's fine with children and while out on his walks he ignores other breeds of dogs most of the time, at others he will bark at. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Elite - Black & White Greyhound

Ellie

Ellie is a small pretty black ex-racing greyhound who shows no interest in other breeds of dogs while out walking. She travels well in a car.

Bundle - black & white Greyhound

Bundle

Bundle is a black and white ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 17th May 2012.
Bundle is a very loving and gentle lad with a nice temperament, but he badly needed a dental when he arrived, which he's now had. He had 31 teeth removed and has recovered well. He is due to be neutered this week.

RESERVED

Suki

Suki is a pretty white and black greyhound who is just 2 years old, and who decided racing wasn't for her.
Suki is inoculated, microchipped and travels well in a car.

HOMED Wednesday 27th December

Tess is a lovely, gentle black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 18th March 2013. She is house trained, spayed, inoculate and microchipped.
Tess is super with children, okay with other breeds of dogs, walks nicely on the lead and travels well in the car.

HOMED Sunday 7th January

Suzie

Suzie is a beautiful small black ex-racing greyhound who is recovering from a broken hock. She travels well in a car, is a lovely girl and will be a nice companion.

HOMED Friday 12th January

Greyhounds available for adoption.
These are still with their owners or trainers waiting a space to come here, but if you wish to adopt one he/she can be brought here for you.

George

George is a black ex-racing greyhound who was born in August 2011 and who is coming here shortly. His nature is that of Ben who we rehomed in that he is very quiet and loves a cuddle and a fuss. He weighs 35 kg. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Laddy

Laddy is a very shy rather leggy black ex-racing greyhound who is coming here shortly. He's about 3 years old, weighs 34 kg. okay on the lead but needs a bit of time to get used to you, we've been told if you give him a week or two he will then be okay. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Diva - Black Greyhound

Diva

Diva is a black female ex-racing greyhound who is coming here shortly.
Diva was born in February 2015, weighs 30 kg, is microchipped and her inoculations are up to date.
Diva only has half a tail because she damaged it by wagging it too much in the kennel, she's a happy girl who travels well in a car. - Can you help us find her a new home?

Peeps

Peeps is a blue male ex-racing greyhound who is coming here shortly. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Jimmy

Jimmy is a 7 year old ex-racing greyhound who is a very gentle dog and who needs a lady owner and who is coming here shortly. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Mohawk

Mohawk is Mick's litter sister so she was born on the 16th November 2015 and is coming here shortly. - Can you help us find her a new home?

If you see a Greyhound listed above as waiting to come in no longer listed, it's because the dog has either been re-homed direct by it's owner or trainer or has gone to another rescue centre.

Dogs in long-term foster homes

Brindle Greyhound

BECKY IS IN A LONG-TERM FOSTER HOME with Beckham another greyhound. Becky is a beautiful fawn brindle ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 2nd May 2004.
Becky lived with an elderly gentleman for a few months, but was sadly returned to 'Rescue' because of the deterioration of her owner's health.
Becky went to her long-term foster home on Tuesday 18th November 2014 where she will be loved and cared for during her twilight years.

Pearly - black greyhound

PEARLY IS IN A LONG-TERM FOSTER HOME
He was re-homed in August 2011, but because of his owner's passing away he came back to us. Pearly is a happy lad who weighs 27.10k .
Pearly suffers from kidney problems and went into long-term foster care on Monday 1st August 2016 where he will stay and be loved and cared for during his twilight years.

ABOUT US:
We've had greyhounds since April 1997 and between July 2004 and November 2009 we fostered 82 for Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue. During December 2009 we established the SOUTH LAKES branch of the Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT). The Retired Greyhound Trust re-branded it's name to the Greyhound Trust on the 1st June 2017 and we are now the 'Greyhound Trust South Lakes'. Since first starting we have now fostered and homed in excess of 485 greyhounds.
Being in the South Lakes we are situated at the southern end of the English Lake District in Cumbria at Witherslack, which is half way between Kendal and Grange-over-Sands. As fosterers it is our passion to help greyhounds through the transition stage from kennels to home life, helping them to adapt to the family way of life and being part of our family until they find their forever homes.

WHY ADOPT A GREYHOUND?

Greyhounds make wonderful pets. They are for life, not just for racing. They all deserve a second chance. Greyhounds are elegent, very intelligent, tend to be laid back, lazy if given the chance, need little exercise, often just two, half hour walks a day. Greyhounds thrive on love and affection, adapt quickly to the family way of life and make very gentle and loyal pets.

Many thousands of Greyhounds are bred each year in the UK and Ireland and thousands of puppies and youngsters are put to sleep because they don't make the grade for racing. The average age of a Greyhound coming into 'Rescue' is 3 to 4 years old when they are no longer needed. However, the normal life expectancy of a Greyhound is between 12 and 15 years - the longest living of the larger breeds of dog means they have many years ahead of them once they are no longer needed for racing Only a very small percentage are the lucky ones who are re-homed.

JENNY & STUART'S
GREYHOUNDS

White and black Greyhound
Lena came into our lives
on the 23rd May 2013. Not
quite 2 years old she didn't
make the grade for racing,
but she raced headlong
into our hearts and home.

Fawn Greyhound

Star came into our lives on the 18th October 2015. When our 4 month old grand daughter cried for her bottle, he came over and rested his head on her shoulder and within a minute she was calm. It sealed his future with us.

Robbie - black Greyhound

Robbie was here a year before being adopted. His new owners lost confidence after he was hurt by 2 off lead terriers. He came back and became the newest member of our family.
