Ned - Black Greyhound

Ned

Ned is a lovely ex-racing Greyhound who was born on the 10th August 2010. He is 100% perfect in the house, very friendly and thrives on love and affection. He is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped.
Before Ned arrived here he was attacked by two off lead labradoodles while out walking with his trainer. The incident has made him scared of dogs other than greyhounds.
In areas where he is the only dog Ned walks nicely on the lead, but when he sees other breeds he can become aggitated, may cry or shake. Instead of trying to escape as he used to he now hides behind his walker for protection. He will sometimes bark at other dog(s) but that's to make out he's a big tough guy and for them to go away. - Can you help us find Ned his forever home?

Robbie - Black Greyhound

Robbie is a large stunning black ex-racing greyhound who was born in November 2010.
He is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped.
Robbie had a few issues when he first arrived and often looked very sad. He is a now a super dog who loves to play, adores cuddles, is 100% perfect in the house and if working in the garden he will follow you around or sit closeby, he just loves being with you. Robbie is okay with children and travelling in the car. He went through a phase where he was fascinated with the television, but that has passed now and he's quite happy to watch the television if it's on.
He walks lovely on a lead and will now watch other dogs out and about who don't come inside his comfort zone, and who are not running and jumping around either on or off lead. This activity used to make him anxious, but recently we've noticed subtle changes, he met and sniffed a collie, a terrier on a lead passing him on his walk he ignored, and he has started giving dogs a wide berth - the 'penny is beginning to drop' !
Robbie is a fantastic dog and will make someone a super, loyal companion. Robbie was re-homed on Saturday 23rd July 2016 but came back 2 days later through no fault of his own.
- Can you help us find him his forever home?

Rummy - black greyhound

Jewel
RESERVED
Jewel is a black ex-racing greyhound who was born on 6th February 2013 and weighs 32k. He is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped. A lovely dog but very timid until he gets to know you. He came here because his last trainer said he couldn't get him out of his kennel - always right at the back shaking and refusing to move. The only way to get him out was at feeding time.
Here Jewel loves playing with his toys, and once he gets to know you will come for cuddles especially if a 'human' food treat is involved. He's okay with other breeds of dogs, walking on a lead and travelling in a car.
The golden rule with Jewel is you do
NOT
touch him when he's in his bed. You can walk past him and say hello but not touch him or show signs of going to get him otherwise he becomes very defensive and at this present time he may snap - past memories and lack of trust coming to the fore. This may change of course but this is the way he is at present. When walking near his bed avoid looking at him in his eyes or bending down towards him, speak to him gently without looking at him and walk past with your arm hanging limp by your side with the back of our hand towards him, we smile and ask him if he's okay. If he wants to say hello he will do so by coming to us and touching the back of our hand.
So, the rule is, if it's time for his walk and he won't get off his bed even when you show him his lead and say walk, come on - then you don't go and he misses his walk. If he later comes to you and you are okay to take him for a walk then hold his collar and put his lead on, then he's quite happy to go, but if he goes back to his bed you hang the lead back up and don't go near him.
Jewel loves his food so he's always there waiting for it at meal times. He's a bit of a guard dog when new people visit and is very insecure around some men. When he comes to you he is a very loving dog and adores being stroked and made a fuss of. Given time, plenty of understanding and TLC he should get there and make someone a super companion once he gains their trust.. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Ray - Black Greyhound

Ray

Ray is a black ex-racing greyhound who was born in November 2011, can be quite nervous until he gets to know you then he's your best friend.
Ray is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped. He travels well in a car, is okay with children and his previous owner / trainer's labrador. Since being here he's met a collie and was fine. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Maxi - black Greyhound

Maxi is a super black ex-racing greyhound who was born in January 2012, He is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped.
Maxi has a beautiful calm nature, loves being cuddled, walks nicely on a lead, shows no interest in other breeds of dogs and travels well in a car. What a super companion he will make someone.

RESERVED

Donna - white & black greyhound

Donna is a lovely sweet white and black greyhound who was born on the 2nd November 2009. She weighs 25kg, is house trained, spayed, inoculated and microchipped.
Donna has a tendency to grumble at any new dogs she meets if they are a bit 'pushy' as if saying respect your elders and behave, but she soon stops once she gets to know them. She is a lovely friendly and affectionate girl who walks super on the lead and travels well in a car. - Can you help us find her a new home?

Lassie is a small black greyhound who was born on the 2nd February 2012 and weighs 24.2kg
She is a very sweet and happy girl who is okay with other breeds of dogs, walks nicely on the lead and travels well in the car.

ABOUT US:
We've had greyhounds since April 1997 and between July 2004 and November 2009 we fostered 82 greyhounds for Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue. At the beginning of December 2009 we began fostering for the Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT) and established their SOUTH LAKES branch. We have now fostered in excess of 350.
Being in the South Lakes we are situated at the southern end of the English Lake District in Cumbria at Witherslack, which is half way between Kendal and Grange-over-Sands. As fosterers it is our passion to help greyhounds through the transition stage from kennels to home life, helping them to adapt to the family way of life and being part of our family until they find their forever homes .

WHY ADOPT A GREYHOUND?

Greyhounds make wonderful pets. They are for life, not just for racing. They all deserve a second chance. Greyhounds are elegent, very intelligent, tend to be laid back,
lazy if given the chance, need little exercise, often just two, half hour walks a day. Greyhounds thrive on love and affection, adapt quickly to the family way of life and make very gentle and loyal pets.

Over 40,000 Greyhounds are bred each year in the UK and Ireland and thousands of Greyhound puppies and youngsters are put to sleep because they don't make the grade for racing. The average age of a Greyhound coming into 'Rescue' is 3 to 4 years old when they are no longer needed. However, the normal life expectancy of a Greyhound is between 12 and 15 years - the longest living of the larger breeds of dog means they have many years ahead of them once they are no longer needed for racing Only a very small percentage are the lucky ones who are re-homed.

but she raced headlong
into our hearts and home.

Fawn Greyhound

Star came into our lives on the 18th October 2015. When our 4 month old grand daughter cried for her bottle, he came over and rested his head on her shoulder and within a minute she was calm. It sealed his future with us.

Jenny and Stuart's hounds - gone but not forgotten

George in 1997
George introduced us to the world
of hounds. Arriving in April 1997
he had been badly treated and
was about 9 years old. Sadly we
only had him 3½ months when
he died. He was our first true love.
He was our
'Gentleman George'.

Solo - brindle greyhoun
Solo melted our heart the moment
he walked through the door - he is
the one who helped heal the
wounds following Bobby's death.
Sadly Solo passed away on the
12th February 2014 aged 7 years
9 months old.

Bobby and Penny
Bobby and Penny arrived the
day after George died.
FOSTERING GREYHOUNDS
IS OUR MEMORIAL TO OUR
DARLING
PENNY
who died in
February 2004 aged nearly
12½ years old. Bobby passed
away on 26th April 2009
aged 13 years 10 months.

Fawn Greyhound
Sandy who we nicknamed
'the beast' arrrived here on the
4th November 2007. In August
2008 we adopted him and at
11.25am on Friday 22nd July
2016 he passed away aged
13 years, 4 months.

Indi in March 2005
When Penny died Bobby
chose Indi as his new
companion and here she
is in March 2005. She helped
us foster nearly 340 dogs.
Indi passed away on the 20th July
2015 aged 14 years 3 months.
