GREYHOUND RESCUE
Fostering and re-homing greyhounds in the South Lake District, Cumbria

Why are there so many
black Greyhounds at the moment?

Indi

Indi is one of Top Honcho's
many offspring

At the moment there seems to be a large number of black greyhounds coming into rescue centres looking for new homes - this is why?

A black greyhound by the name of 'Head Honcho' whose racing history is NCC(116) - 20 starts, 18 wins. Won SA Derby, SA Puppy Classic, Shepparton Cup and 4th Melb Cup was a WORLD CHAMPION SIRE who sired 4,798 offspring. Sadly 'Head Honcho' died in 2001.

One of Head Honcho's offspring was a black greyhound called Top Honcho. Top Honcho sired 10,211 offspring and will always be remembered as one of the greatest sires ever. He had a tremendous impact on the Irish and UK breeding programs. Sadly Top Honcho died on the 5th November 2007.

Many of the offspring of both Head Honcho and Top Honcho are black and it is these offspring and some of

their offspring, and their offspring, who are now arriving in the rescue centres. The young ones being those who didn't make the grade, or are injured and the older ones now their racing careers are over.

Large numbers of black Greyhounds coming into rescue centres will be a trend for some time to come.

Should one of Top Honcho's black offspring become a champion sire then the run of black greyhounds will continue for some time. However if a dog of another colour becomes a champion sire then this will encourage other colours to drift back into the system.
